We offer courses that are designed to give you an introduction to Ruby on Rails and at the same time learn best practices together with the complementary tools and technologies used by Rails developers today when creating advanced web applications.
The courses are available both independently and as a group. The Ruby course supplies the necessary understanding required for completing the Rails course, but is also suitable for those who are only interested in Ruby.
Ruby for beginners as a two day course
This course will teach you how to code in Ruby 1.9 and at the same time give you a thorough understanding of the language. No Ruby skills required, but general programming skills is. Ruby is a fully object oriented dynamic scripting language used to make anything from small server scripts to large web applications. It's a language with beautiful syntax and powerful metaprogramming abilities. Programming in Ruby is a lot of fun. Ruby for beginners is a course for anyone wanting to learn Ruby and for those already using Ruby that want a clear understanding of its inner depths. The course uses the well written and up to date book "The Well-Grounded Rubyist" by David Black as course material, covering two thirds of the book in two days. The course covers Ruby 1.9 with notes throughout the course about changes from Ruby 1.8.
Rails for beginners as a three day workshop
Rails is the most prominent web framework in Ruby, and has coined the term "Ruby on Rails". This course will teach you how to make your own Rails application from the ground up. General Ruby skills is required. Examples of sites built upon Rails include:
This course covers the new Rails 3 framework. It uses the up to date book "Ruby on Rails 3 Tutorial" as course material, and functions as a workshop covering almost the entire book in three days. Course attendees will get hands on experience buliding a sample web application while learning how Rails works on the inside. Due to the amount of coding done by the participants during the course, it's suitable to call this a workshop. It's a great way to learn Rails. In addition to Rails, this course covers several other technologies, including: Git, Heroku, RSpec, Test Driven Development and HTML5.
