The course shows you how to build Silverlight applications that utilize drag–and–drop, dynamic custom controls, streaming media, animation, and integrated Web Services to produce data–driven user interfaces. By the end of the course, youll have seen how all the major Silverlight features work together to create an engaging user experience on the web.

In this first module, you will gain a high–level understanding of Silverlight: its positioning, capabilities, and development tools. You will also see how Silverlight compares to other rich web–enabled technologies such as AJAX and Flash⁄Flex. Then you dive straight into creating a Silverlight application, gaining the core knowledge of how a Silverlight application is structured, deployed and rendered within the browser.

This module will provide you with an overview of four core aspects of Silverlight development: the use of eXtensible Application Markup Language (XAML); the code–beside programming model; the use and declaration of dependency properties and the use and declaration of attached properties.

Here you survey how to use the built–in Silverlight controls. Youll see which controls are available, how to subscribe to their events, and how to design simple user interfaces by arranging controls inside a panel. You will also see a quick survey of the controls in the Silverlight Toolkit, the open source project hosted on CodePlex.

Silverlight offers a powerful layout model, largely driven by panels, all of which have many subtleties that need to be mastered. This module will show you how to create complex UIs using the many different panels available in Silverlight, including the Grid, Canvas, StackPanel, DockPanel and WrapPanel, as well as understand how scrolling and scaling can be controlled. You will also learn how to create your own custom panel for those situations when the standard panels simply wont do, as well as gain an understanding of Silverlights 3D perspective transforms.

Want to build compelling, Rich Internet Applications with Microsoft technology
Want to take existing or planned WPF desktop applications and make them cross–platform
Want to be productive and write Silverlight applications today
Have at least 6 months experience using Visual Studio and .NET (any version) (prerequisite)
Have fluent knowledge of the core C# language (class, inheritance, event, etc.) (prerequisite)
Have a basic understanding of HTML and XML (prerequisite)
No previous experience with Silverlight, ASP.NET, WPF, or Visual Studio 2008 is necessary (prerequisite)

Dave Wheeler is a software consultant specialising in Microsoft UI technologies, fondly known by his Rock Solid Knowledge team as the "Colouring in Guy". He’s particularly fond of WPF and Silverlight, but to remain grounded in reality he also works extensively with ASP.NET and is a moderator on Microsoft’s ASP.NET forums.
