Kurs: Gas Conditioning and Processing (G4 with J. M. Campbell)

Intended for: All engineers directly or indirectly involved with natural gas and its associated liquids, both production and process personnel.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to

• Select and evaluate processes used to dehydrate natural gas, meet hydrocarbon dewpoint specifications and extract NGL's.
• Apply physical/thermodynamic property correlations and principles to the design and evaluation of gas processing facilities.
• Perform and review equipment sizing correlations for major process equipment.
• Recognize and develop solutions to operating problems and control issues in gas processing facilities.

Course content

• Preparation of plant and equipment specifications.
• Basic concepts used in production and processing.
• Vapor-liquid behavior of two-phase hydrocarbon systems - phase calculations, "K"- values, ideal and non-ideal systems.
• Determination of product specifications - gas and liquid contracts, Reid vapor pressure storage, liquid specifications.
• Process vessel design and specification - shell and heads, separation mist extraction, scrubbers, absorbers and fractioners, packed tower, relief and venting equipment.
• Calculation of system energy changes - energy balances, enthalpy, entropy, tables of data, general correlatins. Fundamentals of mass and heat transfer.
• Absorption and fractionation fundamentals - design, specification and operation of towers and accessories. (An optional subject not taught in all sessions).
• Flow of fluids - gas, liquid, and two-phase flow systems, simple, loop, and complex systems, pressure surges and blow-down, metering, heating value, pumping.
• Heat transfer - design, specification and operation of heat exchangers, cooling towers, and air coolers.
• Compression and expansion of fluids - recipro-cating, centrifugal, and axial compressors, gas and expansion turbines, expansion across valves, controls.
• Refrigeration systems - absorption, compression, expansion, choice of refrigerants.
• Liquefaction processes - various cycles used, metallurgy, LNG utilization and economics.
  Water-hydrocarbon system behavior - water content, hydrate formation, hydrate inhibition.
• Absorption dehydration - design, operation and specification of glycol and calcium chloride systems.
• Adsorption processing - use of adsorbents for dehydration and hydrocarbon recovery.
• Process control - principles, applications to field and process use.
