Projects in the subsea industry are large in terms of the budgets and dimensions of the installations. They are also highly risky, and subject to many regulatory and physical constraints. As the oil and gas industry looks for methods to gain more control over cost and schedule, practices from the discipline of systems engineering are emerging as the preferred methods for designing, testing and installing these systems. This course will provide an overview of relevant systems engineering techniques for subsea applications.

Målgruppe

Target group:

Engineers with experience in or training for positions in subsea installations.

Innhold

This course is an overview of the most relevant applications of systems engineering to EPC projects.

Knowledge:

  • Understand that systems engineering is a discipline that has emerged from aerospace applications that face many of the same challenges for performance, reliability, and safety in demanding environments
  • Understand that systems engineering approaches are built on the foundation of systems thinking, giving attention to the whole lifecycle of a system, focusing on interdependencies and interfaces
  • Understand that systems engineering offers a methodology with a proven track record over the past 70 years for facilitating the coordination and cooperation necessary to build multi-disciplinary, complex systems

Skills:

  • Participants will understand the value of systems thinking applied to projects and the importance of lifecycle thinking when identifying and composing requirements;
  • they will learn how to conduct trade-off studies and how to quantify measures of effectiveness and technical performance measures;
  • they will understand how to coordinate the efforts of multiple vendors and multi-disciplinary engineering contribution;
  • they will learn how to conduct configuration control that helps minimize risk and lead to a quality system;
  • finally they will be able to establish system verification plans that contribute to quality assurance.

General competencies

  • Conduct a concept exploration of user needs and generate requirements for a subsea application.
  • Create a configuration management plan and use it to manage progress.
  • Apply best practices in interface management.

The course can be part of NTNU's Master of Science in  Oil and Gas Technology.
