Training requirements for those who use diisocyanates and diisocyanate-containing mixtures.
From August 24, 2023, all users of diisocyanates and diisocyanate-containing mixtures must have completed safe use training with approved results. It must be possible to document the training
What products contain diisocyanates?
Diisocyanates are used in several sealing materials and means for surface treatment. Some examples are construction foam, glue, paint, varnish and sealants. In industry, various products containing diisocyanates are also used.
Who does the claim apply to?
The training requirement applies to all those who use diisocyanates and diisocyanate-containing mixtures and products in professional or industrial establishments, and those who supervise this type of work. The requirement applies to employers, employees and the self-employed.
Use refers to all industrial and occupational applications:
- Handling of open mixtures at room temperature, even in foam tunnels
- Spraying in ventilated cabin (room)
- Coating with roller
- Coating with brush
- Coating with dipping and inclination
- Mechanical finishing, e.g. cutting of incompletely hardened products that are no longer hot
- Cleaning and waste
- Handling of incompletely cured products, e.g. products that are newly cured or still hot
- Foundry applications
- Maintenance and repairs requiring access to equipment
- Open handling of heat designs above 45 degrees Celsius
- Spraying in the open air with limited or only natural ventilation, including in large industrial halls
- High energy spraying, e.g. foam or elastomers
- All other uses with similar exposure when absorbed through the skin or by inhalation
According to REACH Regulation No. 2020/1149, there is more on use and use.
Even small amounts of isocyanates can cause serious health damage. Isocyanates have a high olfactory threshold and cannot be smelled until they are well above acceptable levels. Toxic doses can therefore be inhaled without odour warning.
The course is run as a webinar via Teams.
