Technology as a societal changer, a role play
A journey through time where conversations about challenging issues guide where we are headed. Two years in a row the workshop was a big success at Almedalen in Sweden, as well as won "best workshop" at Innovation Pioneers.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to be one of the greatest changes in humanity since we evolved from homo sapiens. In this workshop we will work with the moral and ethical aspects of AI. How should we relate to AI in society if it suddenly makes decisions which can be directly life-determining or who could remove 50% of the jobs we have today.
The purpose of the workshop is to use role playing as a method to discuss complex matters with unknown outcomes without rights and wrongs, and by that get inspired and challenge the participants’ view of the future.
CGI has developed a role-playing game that revolves around the changes AI and data-driven technology could have on our future. By playing different characters and discussing different dilemmas in group, we understand the problems better and develop our own thinking about complex changes. Scenario design through role-playing is a good method for exploring new areas and an uncertain future. Providing a platform to explore complex dilemmas from different perspectives.
Using roleplay as a workshop method requires you to look at situations from different perspectives. By using character cards you get personal with your new character, they have names, jobs, hobbies and personal traits that all affects how they think in different scenarios.
Said about the workshop:
“The method was so effective and transparent I actually forgot about it and engaged in the different discussions as my character”
• Role playing makes the discussions less personal.
• Role playing shows many perspectives.
• Role playing shows that there is rarely one right answer.
• It is important to play with many different roles to get a fair outcome.
• Role playing is applicable to more topics than AI.
• Role playing is a fun method!
How it works / Method
The workshop starts with an introduction to artificial intelligence and a description of different concepts like strong AI, weak AI, narrow AI and broad AI, and in what areas artificial intelligence could have an impact.
Thereafter, each person is given a persona that they were going to play during the workshop. Everyone gets a persona and a card with information and personal characteristics. Different scenarios are presented and the participants vote and discuss within their group as their personas. Two outcomes, yes or no, are presented for each scenario. During the workshop, the participants are supposed to act like their given persona, and not like themselves, to get an understanding of different perspectives and how implementation and development of technology could affect different people differently.
Minimum 4 hours, can be extended depending on size of group and demand
